A simple explanation about what Plumb and Level is.

Level is when the brickwork is true in the horizontal plane.

Plumb is when the brickwork is true in the vertical plane.

Any bricklayer who knows what they are doing should be able to get within 5mm of plumb in a 2.4M height.
And the same in Level over a distance of 10M.

The pictures speak a thousand words, so have a look.

Laser Level
Start by setting up the laser level, some Laser levels are self levelling, others have to be set up level in order to work.
Set a Datum Mark somewhere on the job, this is usually the finished height you want to finish the brickwork at.
The datum can also be any reference point that all the brickwork will be level at.
When you have done some brickwork that is higher than the datum mark on the profiles transfer the datum mark on to the brickwork itself off the profile for later reference.

Most Lasers are accurate to +- 2mm over 10 Metres when set up correctly, which is very good indeed.
Once you have transferred your Datum onto the profile Mark your gauge down from the datum mark on the profile.
Gauge is generally always marked down from the expected finished height.

Make sure you count the number of courses down from the datum at both ends of the wall, counting down is the only way to ensure that the wall will end up level and not with a pig in it, there is nothing worse than finishing off a wall only to find you have a pig in it..

The only way to get the pig out of the wall is to pull it down and start over, so its vital that you get your levels right to start with.

In the pictures the Datum is taken off the top of the slab and transferred onto a profile.
