Some examples of bad repairs.

Cement mortar over Lime mortar.

Over time the cement mortar will do more damage to the lime mortar than if no repair had been done at all.

The cement mortar also inhibits the release of moisture from the bricks, unlike the lime mortar, so the repaired brickwork will always appear damp.

Cement Wash.

This was someones attempt at fixing old hand made brickwork with a cement wash.
At least it will preserve the bricks until its fixed properly.
